life begins - me

Firefly meme

Lifted from nwhepcat, bastardsnow and d_tepes

When you see this on your flist, post a quote from Firefly

Mal ~ Mercy is the mark of a great man. (pokes Atherton with sword) Guess I'm just a good man. (pokes him again) Well, I'm alright.

(D'you know how hard it was to narrow it down to one quote?!)

head-desk - me

And the drama continues...

SpringerLink. Taylor and Francis. Royal Society Publications. SwetsWise.

All of those are electronic journal providers with whom we have subscriptions/access arrangements. All of them are currently not giving us access to the titles to which we are entitled.

And my boss is on holdiay.

Can't go home early two days in a row...

ETA 24 hours after querying our lack of access with one of the providers, we get a response saying they've been able to log in and get access so it's us at fault. Uh - no it's not. So I've taken screencaps and sent them to them telling them this. What's the betting it'll be another day at least before I hear back?

Oh and a tiny message to one of the people who's been chasing me about it - if you're going to phone me before checking your email then don't get snippy when I say "Oh, did you not get the email I sent this morning?". And when I say I'll let you know as soon as I have any progress, I will let you know as soon as there's any progress. Phoning me every freaking 30 minutes is not going to do anything other than piss me off.

Second edit okay I take it back - after sending them the screencaps, they forwarded the query onto someone who actually seems to know what they're doing and is incredibly efficient. Maybe, just maybe, this'll all be sorted soon.... (and I'm resolutely ignoring the voice in my head telling me that the person I've been emailing is just very good at keeping the customer happy without actually doing anything...)

Why yes, I am a geek. Why do you ask?

Just got my newsletter from and aside from the incredibly tempting caffeinated lip balm (I kid you not!) this caught my eye and I had to share it with everyone who's been having PC 'issues' lately:

Last month's ThinkGeek Techie Haiku Winner is: Christina from Westville, NJ!
Here is the winning Haiku:

    Windows froze. Reboot.
    Can't talk to printer. Reboot.
    This day sucks. Reboot.
My day just got a little brighter on reading that...

(no subject)

An hour and forty minutes.

31 miles

A good deal of it motorways (70mph upper limit) and non-urban carraigeways (60mph upper limit)

An hour and forty minutes?

Doesn't quite match up does it?

Oh, and a good tip for anyone brought up in Thatcherite Britain - do not listen to Elvis Costello whilst stuck in a traffic jam. Or, if you think your blood pressure needs a boost then go ahead - I'd recommend the second disk of the 2004 Best OF album - Tramp the Dirt Down followed closely by Shipbuilding. Has a special ring when you're not moving and can see the empty cranes all along the Clyde...

Someone get me a beer?!
