technology - why do we need it again?

I'm a movie junkie, my spare room is lined wall to wall with bookcases and about half of those bookcases are filled to the brim with videos. I also have a huge bookcase next to my tv in the lounge which is full of dvds. I will pretty much watch anything but I adore well thought out horror/thriller films and I'm a sucker for action as well. The only "chick flick" I can spot from where I'm sitting right now is Moulin Rouge but I'm not averse to watching them - I just tend not to buy them.

So, on Wednesday I was off work and decided to watch some dvds because I was feeling kinda crappy. Picked up season one of Spaced (Simon Pegg is God!!!!) Put it in the player, hit play and watched with growing horror as the pictures came up on screen - there's Simon and he's talking but I'm not hearing anything!!! Arggghhhhhh! My player's about two years old and it wasn't exactly the most expensive thing in the world at the time I bought it. Figuring it would probably cost more to fix than it would to buy a new one I headed out today and bought myself a slightly more expensive DVD player thinking that a brand name one would be less likely to break down on me. Good plan. Except, I bought a Toshiba which works fine (just saw Kill Bill again) and is great and reliable and I can hear what the characters are saying but...

It's not hackable!!!! I have three region 1 dvds that I can't play anymore!! And two of them are Nick Brendon films!!! Gah!!!

Now I'm going to have to tinker about with the old player and see if I can get it fixed so I can use that in the spare room and watch the region 1 disks in there....
