Xander fic question
post-Chosen, post or during Africa, is it now becoming cliched for Xander to come under the influence of/encounter traditional African gods/goddesses/varoyi?

I think I've seen around three of those.

Three do not a cliche make.

Cool - I was thinking along those lines myself that although there are some (very good) stories out there using that plot device, it's not yet been over-used.

Thanks!

That I'm aware of, there's been a story by nwhepcat, one by liz_marcs and one by redrikki (I think that's the name).

I'm not counting Hyena!Xander as part of that trend since, well, Hyena.

Go for it. :)

The two stories that sprang to my mind instantly were nwhepcat's and liz_marcs's as well and since they were among the first I thought of when I stopped to think of Africa repercussion fics I wondered if it was indicative of a wider trend.

My plan for this thing is currently standing at just shy of 1600 words - and that's just the plan! Why is it I seem incapable of writing something short and manageable for these things? :)

I'd tell you to follow nwhepcat's example and write drabbles, but seeing as her latest story in drabbles is like 400 of the things... :)

Ah, well, good luck with it.

*g*

I actually did something similar a while ago - although mine was only ten drabbles long...

*blink* I thought the only person that had Xander in thrall to a goddess was nwhepcat.

I only had Legba and Eshu teasing Xander (and teaching him how to be clever) through his entire time in Africa. In Facing the Heart of Darkness he fought off a possession by a Yandu that almost got Alexandrienne, but that's as close as I've gotte.

redrikki has Xander tricking Eshu into being his tour guide.

I guess I don't see how we're in the same category as nwhepcat since that I would actually call as "under the influence" where as me and redrikki, not so much.

It's a tricky one to classify really - I guess it's more the involvement of those types of beings in a story that I'm really asking about, so in that instance I would probably count your fic in there (and presumably redrikki's as well - thanks for the link, I'll be reading that tonight!) even when they're not posessing him or holding him under a thrall.

(And I just realised my use of the word 'varoyi' was a little unclear, I used to write a Zimbabwean slayer and got used to using the Shona terms for certain things - varoyi is the Shona word for 'evil spirit'.)

Different definitions for "under the influence".

You had Legba and Eshu "influence" Xander, getting him to kill off vampires and maybe find a Slayer.

Qualifies in my book, though it's certainly not the same "influence" as in nwhepcat's story.

Aside from those names previously mentioned in response, I haven't seen that many. Definitely not in cliche territory yet and i'm looking forward to reading.

*phew*! Now I just hope I can pull this off after mentioning it!
