monkey_matt has a question
What bands/albums would a 17 year old emo chick have been listening to in May 2000?

Since he's too flakey to ask himself (and I was... not 17 in that year) I thought I'd ask. :)

(And here's the link to the Slayerversathon!)

monkey_matt has another question - "being or reflecting the essential or genuine character of something". There is a specific word that fits that definition but is not "genuine" or "authentic" - can anyone help?

no idea on the first, but on the second, how about real, literal, or actual?

Good, but still not the one I've lost...

I'm starting to think I might be going bonkers.

Oh, and by the way, I've just added you to my flist (whiskyinmind said I should and as we know she's right about everything) So please feel free to reciprocate/ignore according to your particular preference, predeliction or peccadillo.

Well, it would take a better man than me to deny Sho's rightness about everything, so welcome to the fold. We hope you enjoy the stay, or at least that it doesn't hurt you.

God, it's been along time since I was 17. I'd say anything by Savage Garden

This might help Top 200 songs in 2000

I'm playing catch up and I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, 'sho. I had one when I lived by myself (we have two now). Old Tyson was better than a priest and a hell of a lot more forgiving.

Thank you. When I got home last night it was the first time coming into an empty house and my neighbour called over to make sure I was coping. He said to me "It's strange, but we talk to dogs even though they don't talk back."
I said "They do though, they might not have the words, but they answer."

It's tough, mostly because he was always there and I could talk things over with him without him judging me. Being without that - being without him - is taking a lot of getting used to.
tessarintessarin on October 27th, 2006 01:06 pm (UTC)
On the music no idea , fundamental or innate may work for the word.

If an old word related to authenticity he could try provenance (used in the antiques trade) doesn't really fit the rest of the requirement though.
monkey_matt: Thesaurus - mara_shomonkey_matt on October 27th, 2006 01:41 pm (UTC)
Provenance kind of works, in a roundabout way.

What this actually comes from is a discussion (a rather dull one, imho) of the responsibility of the author to use/remain true to the facts garnered in the course of his/her research.

Christopher Ricks says this in Literature and the Matter of Fact:

"A writer’s responsibility might be put like this: you can’t both lean upon historical or other fact (this being not only permissible but indispensable to many kinds of literary achievement) and at the same time kick it away from under you. You can’t get mileage from the matter of fact and then refuse to pay the fare."

My thoughts were that if one stays "true" to the facts, then you can get away with quite a lot, but here's the rub - I can't remember the darn word that I wanted to use instead of "true". I suppose I could say that if one uses the products of research in such a way as to remain true to the provenance of these facts, then artistic license on the part of the author may largely be excused.

Of course, by the time I'd thought of another way to say it, they'd started having a very weighty and in-depth discussion about the holocaust. So I didn't bother. It's been bugging me ever since though - like the last clue on a crossword, and I just can't get it...
tessarintessarin on October 27th, 2006 01:57 pm (UTC)
Or a virus becuase its got me now.:-)

Second thoughts how about befitting of the facts or faithful to the facts ? Synonyms of authentic.

Aha! The curse is spreading!

Yeah. I don't know. Maybe I'll just have to get drunk and wait for inspiration to hit. Probably about three in the morning, like usually happens.

Ah beer... how we do love thee.

Hee! I just wish our TV stations would get their act together with regards Simpsons - we get new episodes maybe once a month and yet there are four episodes on *every* night at the moment...

The number of times I've seen "Mayored to the Mob" with Mark Hammil is kinda beyond the joke. (uses SW icon just 'cause...)
