Asylum - Day 2, part 2
Previously on Shona's rambling recollections: Jensen Ackles Bruised My Knuckle!

Saturday evening - the Jason Manns gig

During the Q&A with Jensen, someone had asked him about his singing and he mentioned that he had really talented friends like Jason with whom he liked to have jam sessions with, but because he had such talented friends he would never consider singing professionally. A shout came out from the audience to ask whether he would be jamming that night with Jason and Jensen eventually was coerced into saying "We'll see." (The heckler was in fact Jason Manns, not some rabid fanboy... unless Jason is a rabid fanboy? *g*) so pretty much everyone was expecting Jensen to sing that night, which meant there was already a fair sized queue when fresleyforever and I arrived at the venue. We joined purplephoenix03 et al and eventually got into the room which was set out like a wedding reception with large tables organised around a dance floor area. We were asked not to go onto the dance floor during the performance so it meant that we would all be sitting back quite far from the stage but it wasn't too much of a problem since we got a table in the second row.

Jason came on stage and started with Another Number (incidentally co-written with Steve Carlson) and the thing that annoys me most about gigs started happening. People were talking. Loudly.

And then they all spotted the fact that Jensen was sitting at the table in the corner nearest the stage (and quite close to the table we were at) and the volume rose and people began edging their way over to that corner.

I completely get that most people were there to see Jensen, I understand that, but some of us were actually there to hear Jason sing.

Thankfully Jason either didn't notice or was too professional to call attention to it and kept on with his gig.

He is awesome. He needs to come back to the UK and tour closer to me so I can go see him in a proper venue and fangirl over him properly.

By now you all know that Jensen did get up and sing back up on Crazy Love (and again all the Jensen fangirls rushed as far forward as they could) and Jason made the sweetest comment "I just broke rule number one, never have a back up singer who's better looking than you...". After that it was pretty clear that was it for Jensen which would have been fine but the conversations around me just kept on getting louder. I snapped at two people, I'd love to say I'm sorry for that but I'm really not, and eventually I got so frustrated that I end up asking the girls in the table in front of me (who were there for Jason as well) if they minded if I sat on the floor in front of them.

From there I had an unimpeded view and could actually enjoy the gig. Unfortunately it meant that Jason (and Jensen as well) had an unimpeded view of me. Since I've started playing again, I find it's become a natural reaction to me to strum along with a damn good guitarist and that's exactly what I was doing when I realised I was being watched... Jason had this huge smile on his face and was staring straight at me. *blush*

So, gig was really good (even with the annoying conversations going on in the hall) and Jason seems to have the patent on the magic beer - during All I Ask there's a long extended note during which his eyes were closed. His girlfriend/wife? came up and left a fresh pint of beer on the stage during it and when he was finished the sheer surprise on his face was an absolute picture! (This is the note that he was teasing Jensen about by the way - he called over to 'J' to ask if he was up for that note...)

After the gig, I got chatting to the girls at the table I'd been sitting in front of and... I got recognised! I'd been kinda busy fangirling all these fantastic fic writers and someone recognised me for my graphics. I think I died just a little bit! Then got chatting to wenchpixie who was looking awesome as Neil Gaiman's Death and after that I kinda lost track of what happened. Leffe beer is evil, and far too easy to drink! (I'd bought some at the Sainsbury's because the hotel bar prices were a bit shocking really, so I only had two bottles. Two very large bottles.)

Next thing I know we're all up dancing to Don't Fear the Reaper and purplephoenix03 is videoing us... and then aditu_az somehow managed to convince me (and others, I wasn't alone!) that getting up on the stage and leading the dance for Living On A Prayer would be a good thing....

Yeah... I don't actually know what got into me there!

Thankfully it wasn't quite an out of body experience because I had the presence of mind to sit out the Macarena (although certain people didn't... and there's proof...) and we left as the DJ decided that despite the floor being full during the rock music, he was going to play crap like YMCA for the rest of the night.

fresleyforever and I headed back to my hotel because I'd ended up with a twin room and Mary had been sleeping on the couch in her room. She brought her laptop with her and we ended up sitting up for a helluva long time eating M&Ms and watching SPN episodes... So that night I think I got... maybe 3 hours sleep?

Next time: Shona makes Jensen say 'awesome'; Check out the brains in the front row; Callouses and fingernails... *shudder*; Cat saves the day; Fangirls are the best friends!

Did Jason Manns co-write 'Sounds So Good' with Steve, or was that someone else? (I know someone's credited as a co-writer for I spotted it last week when reading the cd case, but I can't remember for the life of me who it was - don't have cd case with me so it will bug me all day if I don't ask!:))

I believe he did! I may have to double check my own CDs when I get home, but I think that's the one he co-wrote
