80s sci fi is odd

Sci Fi UK is having a UK sci fi weekend right now (btw - Ultraviolet starts at 6.50pm, if you watch it on Sci Fi + you can catch it after Doctor Who, it seriously is worth it. If you're in the US and caught the pilot of the US version - it sucks. The UK version is so dark and bleak.... it is so worth looking out for. I have it on DVD and watch it quite often.)

But right now the channel is showing "Day Of The Triffids". It's... odd. I flunked an English assignment in third year and was relegated to the foundation class for a rotation, this was the class that studied 'Day of the Triffids'. I missed that rotation (although my rotation in that class was 'Buddy's Song', the book that essentially launched Chesney Hawkes' one-hit-wonder career). I've never read the book. I've always been quite snobbish and seen it as somehow 'beneath me'. But I can't be arsed changing the channel right now and dude.... this is kinda freaky! Was everyone working in TV in the early-to-mid-80s on crack?!

*sigh*

So anyways, I'm no further on with my essay because bizarre 80s sci-fi is eating my brain.

But I did make icons.

I love the Day of the Triffids have it on Dvd because I tried taping the scifi one but kept missing the end. Yep wonderfully bleak.

The follow up novels are slightly odd but worth checking out. Bit like a cross of Triffids and Land of the dead.

Lot of the stuff of the time probably is dark like this , survivors or Blakes 7 and Edge of Darkness.

And whatever happened to John Duttine ?

I have to say - this channel knows its market, because right now I'm so damn intrigued by this show that I want to see more! (they're moving on to Invasion Earth soon so I guess they'll be showing more next week?)

I also have to wonder at my choldhood spent watching the A-Team and Knight Rider when I could have been watching this!

For some reason I seem to be watching endless John Wayne movies this weekend.:-)

Well, since it would have been The Duke's 100 birthday - I think you could be forgiven for that.

(but I'm quite happy watching obscure and slightly cheesy sci fi....)
