IT help request!
Friend of mine at work is having trouble with her new broadband connection and asked me earlier if there was anything I could suggest for her and I've not been able to come up with anything her friend hasn't already tried.

Basically she can get online okay, except for sites like Gmail, Hotmail and her Sky email. She's using Internet Explorer 6 (I think) and can't download IE7 because the computer doesn't open the download window. She's running XP and it is a genuine version of XP that came loaded onto the computer so it's not an upgrade.

She was having trouble with the ActiveX plug in as well, but that seems to have been sorted.

I did suggest she try Firefox (or another browser) in case it's a problem with IE itself (other than, y'know, IE kinda sucking out loud...)

Any suggestions?

(She previously had AOL but has removed it from the computer, I'm thinking it's maybe screwed with her Registry keys somewhere along the line?)

thedothatgirl - I got a little distracted by the squee last night so I didn't get to do any more work on the AVAs, today - I promise! (If you have a template file for your tables/layout that's all I'd need for the voting (as well as the final list of options))

I'm considering posting my Dark Angel drabbles to other sites/comms etc. Anyone have suggestions where I should be posting them? If I... y'know, actually get up the nerve to share them with people who've been in this fandom a helluva lot longer than I have...

AOL is teh evol...

Probably is something to do with that. When my last computer died (cos of AOL eating it) I had to do a complete reboot. Wipe the hard drive. Everything. Then, and only then, would it allow me to reconnect to the Internet.

Obviously, if she's got a rollback function, she could try that, see if there's been a change in the registry due to adding/removing something?

Or get her to go to Start, Run and type
regsvr32 jscript.dll

I have no idea what it does as such. Nothing bad. Just got a laptop at work with a simliar problem today. That solved it.

The gmail thing threw me for a while as well, I've forwarded on this advice to her to see if it helps out any.

(would the https thing be preventing the IE7 download as well?)

Looks like you're going to have a really great time. Hope the weather improves for your trip down for your concerts.

I thought I heard squeeing last night over the top of the thunder clap that totally frakked our internet/router/network from 3pm to 3pm today.

WTFOMG 24hrs without internet. I nearly died for godsake. Still, I got a load of banners made for BOTB - Wildcard list is on it's way to you - add what you want and then i can send you the template thingie >

Apparently AOL cannot be removed properly from your system - it reconfigs all internet/email settings to AOL'sville and totally screws IE - John googled it some while back when he was fixing things for peeps and you need to run extra stuff after uninstalling. Suggest use proper uninstall and then google for internet forums which have AOL uninstall patches/fixes.

Evil Sho sent mind control thought patterns my way. AC, you wanna come see Steve?! There still seems to be the odd ticket hanging around despite the rumours. (Don't know how I know that....*cough* *evil hand* *cough*.)

Hee! Given the debacle with my camera at Asylum, I'm thinking of buying a disposable one and just having done with it..
thedothatgirlthedothatgirl on July 6th, 2007 09:53 am (UTC)
Tell Beck to bring hers.....
the girl who used to dance on fire and brimstone: music//kane cheers - mewhiskyinmind on July 6th, 2007 09:58 am (UTC)
Ooo - good call! And aditu_az will no doubt have hers as well (from whence this little animation came from...)

I've just checked out how much disposable cameras are these days - they're cheaper than I remembered them being! I might just get a couple to try out (because you never know, I might be lucky!)
thedothatgirlthedothatgirl on July 6th, 2007 10:47 am (UTC)
Well if they are cheap then it will be worth trying.

For the template of my page layout do I just cut % paste the html code from frontpage into notepad and send it? I am such a divvy.

the girl who used to dance on fire and brimstone: life online - see comment for creditwhiskyinmind on July 6th, 2007 10:49 am (UTC)
the template - absolutely. Or you could send the entire HTML file to me rather than having to create a new txt file - whichever's easiest for you.

Awesome - I don't think I could cope with 24 hours without t'internet! There would be murder by the end...

That said, I wasn't really online much last night because it got a little stormy in my part of the world as well so...

Will email you really soon with the final reviews and wildcards.
